Return to Prairie Minstrel

1843 Song Book

This song book was purchased on eBay. It is a wonderful primary source of songs from

the early to mid 19th century and needs to be shared with those who would be interested in it.

There are a number of songs that are familiar to us today and many that are not. The melodies

from 1843, however, are generally different - one obvious example being Yankee Doodle.

Various words have also changed over the years. Again, a line from the 1843 Yankee Doodle

states: "Our tars will show the haughty foe, Columbia's sons are handy."

Tar was a period term for the sailors who handled the tarred rope rigging of the sailing

ships, and Columbia was a early term for America.

These songs are public domain. You can print them off and use them however you wish.

would be appreciated in any publication.

I'm scanning and posting songs periodically. If there is a song or songs that you

would like to see right away, email me at tsevance@mchsi.com and I'll get them up.
